The One Man Show - Photopea Success Story

Happy Friday!!
In an industry where giants like Adobe Photoshop dominate, can you imagine a startup can compete with them let alone that startup consists of only one person? That is what exactly happened in the photo editing industry.
What do you get when you mix three (3) unusual variables?
Ans: When you mix three unusual variables (Online + Almost 80% features of Adobe Photoshop + No cost for users) you get Photopea.
If you search online Photoshop on Google the first result that you will get is Photopea.com

How It All Started?
Photopea was created by a single man named Ivan Kutskir. Ivan lives in the Czech Republic but was born in Ukraine. He graduated from Charles University in Prague.
Ivan loves programming and before opening Photopea he used to create icons for tools, games, and other programming-related things that he mentioned in his blog.
Ivan’s idea was simple, he thought if he could make a replacement for a popular commercial product then people would get drawn to that automatically and he was very confident about his programming skills and knew he could make any software he wanted.
From that idea in 2012 created a website for displaying PSD (Photoshop Document) files. The first version was released in 2013, the best thing about that site as you can see the layers of the PSD Files. If you used Photoshop you already know what layer is. Over time it became a full graphic editor which is known as Photopea.
Major Three (3) Problems Photopea Solves
It makes advanced (Industry standard) editing possible and accessible for everyone. Where other similar software drills a hole in the pocket, Photopea is free to use though it has a paid version that shows no ads.
Supports every format which makes editing much easier for people as many software have the limitation of having format limits or they create their format.
Similar features with almost the same UI (User Interface) as Photoshop so that people who are trained in Photoshop can work on Photopea without breaking a sweat and with no cost.
Business Model of Photopea
Photopea uses a freemium model, which means it is free for the user, and there are no hidden charges. Then how does Photopea generate income?
Revenue sources of Photopea
The main revenue source of Photopea is ads. There is one ad that is displayed in the sidebar. Almost 14 million people use Photopea in a month and spend more than 1.5 million hours a month. The ads usually make 6 to 10 cents each hour someone spends which generates more than $150,000 a month for Photopea. The traffic it gets is organic traffic which is mostly spread by word-of-mouth.
As per SEMrush
Similarweb - 14.3 Million Visits Per Month
Another revenue stream that Photopea recently added is a paid plan that is only $5 per month which is way lot cheaper than its alternatives.
Expenses of Photopea
Photopea may seem like spending a lot of money is their website as running software with Photoshop caliber might cost a lot, well that I used to think.
It is the opposite, Ivan pays $70 to $100 a year for hosting and a small fee for the domain. There is no other cost.
Photopea mainly runs on the uses the users’ system so there is no added cost for that.
How Much Photopea Grew Over The Years?
Rather than telling you let me show you the growth curve of Photopea.
In Thousand USD
I had a small interview with Ivan and got to know the latest ARR which is over $2 Million. Ivan started it in 2013 and see where he took it with consistency and hard work.

One Funny Instance
Once Ivan forgot to update a script and for that, Photopea was down for 12 hours as it was during nighttime. The next morning Ivan’s phone flooded with emails and there were almost 50 tweets regarding the issue.
Which shows how many people were engaged with Photopea.
Takeaway
Niche Market Can Be Lucrative: While giants in their fields control the other markets, there is a place for newcomers; young artists, and entrepreneurs working to connect those who are not well served. This fact that Photopea has proved with its existence.
SELLING SIMPLICITY: By providing a simple, diagnoseable solution to complex problems we can draw in large cohorts of the market.
